The Farm

This is an interesting opportunity to become part of a dairy unit in Jersey  on a farm in operation since the 16th Century.

The unit is progressing rapidly and looking to increase herd size and update facilities in the next 18 months.  The farm is aiming to become the leading example of dairying on the island. All dairy operations are kept in-house, including relief milking,  foot trimming, AI, stock rearing and forage production.  

The Role.

Reporting to the Farm Manager, our client is seeking an experienced Herdsperson who will  work well with the existing team, be enthusiastic about the innovative approach here and wish to contribute to the ultimate aim to become the leading example of dairying on the island.

Specific role requirements include:

  • Good people management skills
  • A meticulous approach to data and record keeping
  • Livestock handling skills with excellent cow husbandry skills and experience in order to sustain high herd  health and welfare
  • Forward thinking with an interest in progressive approaches to farming
  •  Competent Milker – A share of weekly milkings are expected to be completed.

Assistant Herdsperson in South Wales Ref 1417  -  Enquire about this vacancy»

Position: Assistant Herdsperson   

Location: South Wales 

The Farm & Role

Initially, this is an immediate position to work alongside existing Herdsperson  over the Autumn  and Winter to learn the diverse, mixed role on this dairy unit, with the potential to become permanent and replace this herdsperson next March when he will be leaving.

The 200 Holstein Friesian herd are grazed through the Summer, cubicle housed in Winter.  Milking twice daily in 10:20 Herringbone parlour.  AI in house, so potential for someone to get involved with this. Everything served to Belgium Blue. The farm also pasteurise a proportion of their own milk to sell direct.

Specific duties will include:

  • Expected to learn and undertake routine foot trimming,
  • AI in-house, identify bulling cows,
  • Identify and treat illness,
  • Calf feeding,
  • Milking – will consider applicants with basic experience willing to train up with current Herdsperson,

Feeding stock,

  • Yard work.

Modern dairy farm on 750 acres with 300 commercial Holsteins – Flying herd on RMS is seeking a reliable and competent Assistant Herdsperson to milk twice daily

in a 20/40 DairyMaster. Auto ID and auto shedding in place. The herd are cubicle housed with TMR.  There is also a 500 beef herd reared on this farm.  

Specific role requirements:

  • Milking,
  • Stock duties,
  • Some tractor work.

The Farm and the Role

First-rate family run farm offers an exceptional job opportunity for an experienced Head Herdsperson/Herd Manager. Recently renovated 3 bed house located within vibrant village will be provided to successful applicant.

A 250-300 Friesian Holstein closed herd is the focus here, with milking daily in a 20:40 Herringbone milking parlour. The herd are housed for the majority of the year with some grazing.

This is an excellent opportunity to lead a small team and focus resources on the dairy herd.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The herd health and welfare
  • Active managerial involvement, responsible for managing 2 other staff
  • Completion of 10 milkings per week
  • Vet routines, vet lists, record keeping (calving cows, medicine use etc)
  • Computer literate to use electronic herd record programme
  • Completion of day book

Essential to be competent in AI and keep the current high standards and results; good fertility results paramount.

Foot trimming not essential but useful if able to complete as necessary in-between the routine foot trimmer visits.

This is a modern, well equipped dairy farm with provision of excellent accommodation and working conditions for a Head Herdsperson.

A 400 acre farm with a 350 Holstein Pedigree herd, milking twice daily in a 20/40 swingover milking parlour with Auto ID, Auto segregation gate and ADF.  The herd are grazed in summer – cubicle housed in winter. The farm rear all own replacement stock with block calving in place. Foot trimming and AI all done in house.

Specific activities will include:

  • Management of herd health and welfare,
